The 1st of November today and the Halloween witches will certainly have decided not to take a trip out on the old broomstick last night for fear of being struck by lightening.

Our weather patterns over the last few weeks have been bizarre for this time of year and we have had some spectacular electrical storms in the evenings, but nobody ordered the hour of hail stones that we experienced last week. Yes, you read it right... hail stones in Cyprus!!

Holiday makers staying with us during this strange time may have experienced all seasons in one day. It still didn't spoil hot sunny days on the beach for the rest of the week with some awesome night skies.

Our personal strange weather story involves cats. The day after the storm we set out from Paphos to Pegeia and half way there decided that the strange noises we were hearing were not wet tyres or a squeaky fan belt. We stopped, lifted the bonnet and discovered three very scared, tiny kittens hiding amongst the hoses and pipes. After careful manipulation I managed to retrieve them without burning myself or them and returned back home. The mother cat, a local in our neighbourhood, was more than pleased to see them safe and sound. I don't know whether she has questioned the merits of hiding them where she did but at the young age of 4-5 weeks old they are now seasoned travellers.

Moving on a little from Cats to mice, there has been a very exciting discovery in Cyprus over the summer. A new species of mouse "Muscypriacus", described as a living fossil. The mouse has bigger than normal head, ears, eyes and teeth and is only found in Cyprus. Experts proclaim it to be the first new mammal to be discovered in Europe in 100 years!

RESTAURANT REVIEWS:

ANO KATO (GREEK & CYPRIOT TAVERN) Directions: With Alexander The Great Hotel on your right, take the next turn left and Ano Kato is the first restaurant on your right hand side. Unusual subtle flavours, fresh seasonal produce, authentic Greek & Cyprus dishes and not just meat on skewers, large choice for vegetarians. The Meze is recommended and will be fully explained by Greek/Cypriot waiters who all know their stuff. Nothing is too much trouble and Greek music adds great atmosphere.

SOPHIE'S (THEME RESTAURANT & BAR) - Located behind the Jail Bar in Pegeia Village. A different theme each night of the week, Indian, Thai, Chinese and traditional carvery. Eat as much as you like. 5 courses each night. A highly recommended restaurant by locals and holiday makers.

HOLLY'S - Take the road from Paphos to Coral Bay and at the crossroads just before the Amazon Restaurant, turn left and Holly's is located 50m on the left. We felt we had to mention a Xmas menu seeing as the season is nearly upon us. A friendly family run establishment where all food is truly home made and delicious. Interesting choice for Xmas - STARTER of minestrone or tempura cod and monkfish, MAIN of turkey and the trimmings or salmon and spinach Wellington (yum!), followed of course by Xmas pud or assiette of desserts (tempting selection all on one plate!) plus coffee and mince pies. N.B. BOOK EARLY

Well, it's been a busy summer and we have made many new friends. Winter is a different experience in Paphos and a time to mix with the locals and the many expats that live here. Life is less hectic and you will find the same cheery welcome from the locals and it's a chance to explore the villages and discover the real Paphos.

We look forward to meeting more of you on the run up to Christmas and if that isn't your immediate agenda, then in the new year.

Don't eat too many toffee apples and make sure the hedgehogs are safe.

Until Next Time - Keep Dreaming
